about pregnancy and yoga
I am passionate about sharing pregnancy yoga with women throughout their pregnancy to empower and nurture them and help them connect to themselves at this special time. For me its the ultimate time in your life to practice yoga and I am delighted to be able to share this with the women of York. My pregnancy yoga classes in York are super friendly and welcoming and are for everyone - from 14 weeks of pregnancy right up to birth and no previous yoga experience is required. My pregnancy yoga classes are for you whatever type of birth you want to have - everyone is very welcome. My weekly pregnancy yoga classes give you time each week to connect to your pregnancy, your body, your breath (so important) and your baby in our busy lives. And my longer Pregnancy Yoga Mini Retreats give you an extra special nurturing time to relax and have some special pregnancy me-time.

about your yoga teacher
Hello I'm Susan, and I am a York based yoga teacher and a Yorkshire lass. I have had yoga in my life for over 18 years. I am a mother of two, and a lover of sunshine, good food, strong coffee and red wine. I'm not particularly 'sporty' or 'bendy', and I'm certainly not a former dancer or gymnast (and I often struggle with knowing my left from my right!) In essence I'm just a normal person with a passion for sharing yoga with others. Hoping to show you that yoga is for everyone, and can help you feel so much better in body and mind.
My classes and workshops aim to bring you more in touch with your body, your breath and and your mind. To notice how we are doing in the moment. We more with attention to the breath and the FEEL of the shapes and movement in your body. I often teach some breath work (pranayama) which I believe can be such a great counter to the busyness and stress of modern life. In my Slow Down Yoga classes and Slow Sunday yoga workshops I also like to work to work with other senses - including soundscapes and smell with aromatherapy and essential oils, to create a really special sanctuary in the city to calm, relax and be present in.
I have a real love of teaching Pregnancy Yoga, Mum & Baby Yoga as well as sharing yoga with women who are trying to conceive with Fertility Yoga. My love of helping pregnant women and couples navigate their pregnancy and birth brilliantly, calmly and positively has also led me to become a trained Doula and a Hypnobirthing teacher (I'm proud to teach a Royal College of Midwives accredited course ). I also am a volunteer with the Positive Birth Movement and help to run and facilitate the Positive Birth Movement York monthly meetups, and I also volunteer my time to be a breastfeeding peer supporter with amazing Treasure Chest . So that basically makes me a pregnancy and birth geek!
My yoga training and professional registration is with the Yoga Alliance (200 hour level), and I have also undertaken additional training with world renown teachers such as Nadia Narain at Triyoga, Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, Lolly Stirk, Judith Hanson Lasater, legendary Obstetrician Michel Odent & Liliana Lammers, and Katharine Graves. I have further been inspired by the teachings of Erich Schiffmann, Donna Farhi and Norman Blair.
about yoga for modern life
With Yoga For Modern Life my mission is to help you find some time to reconnect with yourself in this busy world. I have an inclusive, straight forward approach to yoga that simply helps you to feel good in body and mind.
My yoga classes in York are friendly, supportive and nurturing and aim to foster a sense of community. I use simple language (no sanskrit), there is no chanting and no incense (although I am quite partial to using candles and aromatherapy oils to create a lovely atmosphere). Classes include yoga postures for the body, combined with simple breathing exercises and some time for guided relaxation at the end. As a teacher I shares what I enjoy, what I have experienced and explored in my own body and that which has spoken to me in some way and I feel will benefit others. I believe that making even a small amount of time in your life for yoga can be hugely rewarding whatever your age, fitness level, shape or size - this yoga is for everyone. Come and give it a try!
